Job Description Job Description Summary of Responsibilities
Lead maintenance team to deliver safe, reliable high-pressure die casting equipment and supporting facilities. Build a skilled, motivated team; establish effective preventive and predictive maintenance; eliminate recurring failures; and execute prioritized equipment restoration plans. Partner with Production, Engineering, Quality and Purchasing to protect product quality, equipment availability and lifecycle cost.
This role offers an entrepreneurial leader the freedom and support to shape maintenance strategy, challenge conventional approaches and turn ideas into lasting improvements. Own priorities and develop the team with autonomy within approved budgets, delegated authority, safety standards and company policies-and clear accountability for machine uptime, PM effectiveness, consumables cost, spare-parts management and team morale.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities
Lead maintenance activities across all three shifts through the department leadership.
Follow the Magna Employee Charter and Operational Principles.
Safety and Compliance
Promote and practice "safety first" by immediately addressing hazards, defective equipment and unsafe conditions in the department, on the manufacturing floor and at workstations.
Address unsafe work practices through training or progressive discipline, as appropriate.
Ensure required training, licenses, reports and documentation are completed and maintained for lockout/tagout (LOTO), fall protection, cranes, booms, 5S, fire exits, waste, personal protective equipment (PPE), confined spaces, forklifts, incident reporting and bloodborne hazards.
Ensure maintenance team members attend required daily and weekly safety and shift communications and receive safety-related training promptly.
Support plant accident and incident investigations. Ensure investigations involving maintenance team members are completed in full and submitted to HSE within 24 hours of the incident.
Reliability and Preventive Maintenance
Own a dynamic, risk-based preventive maintenance program. Define asset-specific tasks, frequencies, acceptance criteria, labor and parts using equipment condition, failure history and manufacturer recommendations. Protect maintenance windows with Production, audit work quality and convert findings into corrective work orders.
Apply predictive and condition-based maintenance according to asset criticality, including oil analysis, hydraulic fluid cleanliness, vibration monitoring, thermography and leak monitoring where appropriate. Maintain accurate asset records, maintenance plans and work histories in MaintenX, and schedule corrective work before failure.
Lead structured root-cause analysis for major and recurring failures. Assign owners and due dates, verify corrective-action effectiveness and incorporate lessons into maintenance standards, spare-parts strategies and training. Prioritize permanent solutions over repeated temporary repairs.
Partner with Production on operator equipment care, abnormal-condition reporting and clear boundaries between operator care and skilled maintenance. Improve housekeeping, lubrication and early defect detection; reduce energy losses, fluid leaksand resource waste. Partner with Engineering and Quality on controlled return to production after significant repairs, including required safety and process checks.
Team Leadership and Development
Lead through department leadership on all shifts with urgency, safe work practices and attention to quality and production priorities. Build a motivated team through clear expectations, coaching, recognition, employee involvement and visible leadership; encourage technical curiosity, knowledge sharing and ownership of improvements.
Maintain a skills matrix and individual development plans. Provide OEM and hands-on training, mentoring, cross-training, apprenticeship opportunities and competency verification. Equip every shift with calibrated diagnostic tools, current schematics, troubleshooting guides, software access and technical support.
Conduct performance evaluations according to company requirements. Promote the Open Door Process without reprisal, effective communication and fair treatment.
Planning and Investment
Lead daily maintenance reviews and documented shift handovers covering equipment condition, breakdowns, risks and recovery ownership. Maintain a prioritized MaintenX backlog and weekly schedule with job plans, parts, resources and production access confirmed. Establish escalation and after-hours coverage with accountable leadership through recovery and handover.
Assess equipment condition and execute a prioritized, multiyear restoration and modernization roadmap. Define target conditions for safety, reliability, process capability, maintainability and obsolescence risk. Prepare operating and capital budgets, shutdown scopes and project justifications; manage cost, schedule, contractors and acceptance criteria through verified closure.
Report project status and equipment risks, drive continual improvement, and establish and improve productivity, quality, environmental, health and safety goals. Adhere to customer requirements, the Business Operating System and company policies. Perform other assigned job-related duties.
Purchasing and Spare Parts
Partner with Purchasing and the crib team to optimize spare parts using asset criticality, equipment bills of material, consumption, lead times and failure consequences. Establish critical-spares lists, minimum/maximum levels and reorder points; improve inventory accuracy, storage, preservation and repairable-component management. Reduce stockouts, obsolescence and emergency purchases without compromising availability.
Approve purchases within delegated authority, verifying technical suitability, need, quality, warranty and lifecycle cost. Standardize components where practical and establish dependable supplier, repair and OEM support. Optimize consumables usage and cost without compromising safety, quality or equipment condition.
Technology and Launch Readiness
Evaluate and pilot advanced technologies through practical business cases and defined success criteria. Partner with technical experts to validate benefits, train users and sustain adopted solutions within approved safety, cybersecurity and company requirements.
Review reliability, maintainability, accessibility, component standardization and lifecycle support before equipment purchase. Verify launch readiness through technical documentation, spare parts, PM plans, technician training, software backups, warranty provisions and closure of acceptance issues.
Maintain controlled electrical, hydraulic and pneumatic drawings, equipment histories, PLC/HMI/robot program backups and restoration procedures. Manage equipment changes with Engineering and authorized specialists through review, documentation and validation. Maintain contingency plans for critical failures and obsolete controls.
Machine uptime: Improve equipment availability and reduce unplanned downtime, repair duration and recurring breakdowns.
PM effectiveness: Demonstrate failure prevention through work-quality audits and reduced repeat failures-not simply scheduled-task completion.
Consumables cost: Optimize usage and cost against budget and production volume without compromising safety, product quality or equipment condition.
Spare-parts management: Ensure critical-parts availability, improve inventory accuracy and reduce stockouts, emergency purchases and obsolete inventory.
Team morale: Build engagement and motivation through development, recognition, involvement and constructive feedback; monitor confidential team feedback, retention and development participation.
Qualifications
Demonstrated maintenance leadership in high-pressure die casting or a comparably complex automated manufacturing environment, with a practical understanding of die casting cell equipment and utilities.
Demonstrated ability to improve reliability through preventive maintenance, structured troubleshooting, root-cause analysis and technician development.
Strong people leadership skills: build positive working relationships, coach and motivate teams, make timely decisions and lead by example with a constructive attitude.
Clear written and verbal communication; ability to prepare and interpret reports, instructions, procedures and guidelines, and present information to management, team members, suppliers and customers.
