Master Thesis - CFD prediction of green fuel combustion applied to gas turbine combustors.
A Snapshot of Your Day
The proposed master thesis aims to address how to model hydrogen flames with a good compromise between accuracy and cost. Flames with high concentration of hydrogen pose several challenges compared to more conventional fuels. Hydrogen has got a low molecular weight, is very diffusive and highly reactive, where all aspects need to be accurately predicted in a CFD model to get a good representation of the flame characteristics. The methodology will be applied to Siemens Energy’s 100% capable hydrogen burner design or parts related to such a design.
This project offers an exciting opportunity to learn about gas turbine engines and contributes to the advancement of combustion research and the development of more efficient and environmentally friendly combustion systems.
How You’ll Make an Impact
Evaluate combustion models for pure hydrogen combustion.
Investigate what mesh and model strategy that obtains best accuracy using minimal number of cells using both RANS and LES simulations.
Apply the selected methodology to a part of the SGT-800 combustor.
Evaluate the improved methodology compared to Siemens Energy standard approach, i.e. accuracy versus number of cells.

Currently enrolled in a master's program in mechanical engineering, aerospace engineering, or a related field.
Strong background in heat transfer, FEM and/or CFD analysis.
Background in programming.
Proficiency in numerical modelling and simulation software.
Good problem-solving, analytical, and communication skills.
About the Team
In our team (Computer Aided Engineering of Combustion Systems) we have many talented and highly educated engineers with different backgrounds and responsibilities. We strive to support each other and build a strong technical knowledge within the team. We collaborate closely with the turbine and compressor CFD/HT departments, and our team includes specialists in the field who are available to provide support.
Our Gas Services division offers Low-emission power generation through service and decarbonization. Zero or low emission power generation and all gas turbines under one roof, steam turbines and generators. Decarbonization opportunities through service offerings, modernization, and digitalization of the fleet.
We can offer you employment benefits such as: reduction of working hours, advance vacation, health care allowance and an eventual possibility to a flexible working place.
