ABOUT

=====

Title: About the US Navy

Text: The US Navy is one of the armed forces of the United States, responsible for security and operations at sea around the world. Founded in 1775, it has about 340,000 active-duty sailors stationed on bases, ships, and submarines across the globe. Joining is enlisting in military service, which is different from a civilian job: you sign a *multi-year contract*, go through about nine weeks of boot camp, and commit to serving where and when you are needed.

Text: For a lot of young people, the appeal is a way to build a career without college debt. You can enlist with a high school diploma or GED (ages 17 to 41, with a parent's consent if you are 17), pass the ASVAB aptitude test, and train in one of over 90 career fields, many of which transfer directly to civilian jobs. The trade-offs are real, though: long stretches away from home, limited control over your schedule and location, and a commitment you cannot simply walk away from.
