Master Thesis: Design of flow rig for aero-acoustic characterizationof noise reduction solutions
A Snapshot of Your Task
Noise reduction systems e.g. silencers, are frequently used in auxiliary systems of gas turbines. As the design requirement of each silencer varies, a robust flow rig is necessary for the acoustic characterisation under the operating conditions of a gas turbine, i.e., in the presence of flow, high pressure and high temperature.
Your task will be to initiate the design process of the test rig. You will begin with evaluation of the existing setups used in experimental methods for aero-acoustic characterisation, e.g. the two-port method. Optimise their design to meet the operating conditions of Siemens Energy products. Moreover, also design the minor components, attachments for the test rig. Following the building of the test rig, perform experiments and analyse multiple noise reduction systems.
The aim is to have a robust as well as a versatile design of the test rig which balances the measurement quality, user friendliness and cost.
How You’ll Make an Impact
Your responsibilities for the Master Thesis include, but are not limited to:
- Conducting a literature review of the existing methods and evaluating the needs of the test rig.
- Design of attachments, and subcomponents of the test rig.
- Experiments and analysis of aeroacoustic behaviour of systems hence validating the performance of the test rig.
- Develop postprocessing scripts and optimise them.
- Present your results to a global team within R&D Test.
With this assignment you will have the ability to train and improve your problem-solving capabilities by developing skills to transform the theory you will stumble upon during your coursework and pre-study into practice.
What You Bring
We believe this Master Thesis opportunity is suitable for students in their last year of studies within engineering working on a specialization or harnessing interest within acoustics, material science, mechanical design or similiar. We hope you are someone with the following attributes:
- Passion for new technological advancements and engineering challenges.
- Willingness to learn and adopt to new information and knowledge.
- Preferably have experience in CAD e.g., Siemens NX or PTC Creo.
- Self-driven with a problem-solving mindset to achieve completion of tasks.
- Enthusiasm to observe and learn from working alongside highly qualified professionals within the domain.
- Wishes to develop confidence in solving complex Multiphysics problems related not only specifically to Gas Turbine technology but also in general, giving you a competitive edge in today’s career market.
