Structural Steel Fitter Foreman
Location: Tampa, FL
Pay: $32.00–$36.00 per hour, based on experience
Schedule: Full-time
Position Overview
We are seeking an experienced Structural Steel Fitter Foreman to lead fitting and fabrication activities in a heavy structural steel manufacturing environment. This is a hands-on leadership position responsible for supervising fitters and helpers, coordinating daily production, maintaining quality standards, and ensuring work is completed safely and according to specifications.
The ideal candidate has strong structural steel fitting and fabrication experience, proven leadership skills, and the ability to interpret complex blueprints and shop drawings.
Responsibilities
- Lead and supervise structural steel fitters, fabricators, and fitter helpers.
- Assign daily work and coordinate manpower according to production priorities.
- Work alongside the team when necessary to maintain productivity and meet deadlines.
- Read and interpret structural steel blueprints, shop drawings, weld symbols, and specifications.
- Oversee the layout, fitting, assembly, and tack welding of structural steel components.
- Verify dimensions, elevations, angles, hole locations, and overall assembly accuracy.
- Ensure fabricated components meet project specifications and quality requirements.
- Identify and correct fit-up, alignment, and fabrication issues.
- Coordinate material movement and workflow with welding, production, and quality-control personnel.
- Monitor employee performance, productivity, attendance, and adherence to procedures.
- Train and mentor fitters and helpers on proper fabrication methods.
- Enforce safety policies and maintain a clean, organized work area.
- Inspect tools and equipment and report maintenance or repair needs.
- Communicate production status, material shortages, and project concerns to management.
Qualifications
- At least five years of structural steel fitting or heavy fabrication experience.
- Previous lead, foreman, or supervisory experience in a fabrication shop.
- Advanced ability to read structural steel blueprints and shop drawings.
- Strong knowledge of layout, fitting, fabrication, tack welding, and assembly methods.
- Proficiency with tape measures, squares, levels, fitting tools, and precision measuring equipment.
- Ability to identify and resolve dimensional and fit-up problems.
- Knowledge of structural steel shapes, plates, beams, columns, and welded assemblies.
- Strong leadership, communication, and organizational skills.
- Ability to manage several projects and production priorities simultaneously.
- Commitment to workplace safety, quality, and productivity.
- Ability to work in a heavy industrial manufacturing environment.
- Reliable attendance and transportation are required.
Physical Requirements
- Ability to stand, walk, bend, climb, and work in various positions throughout the shift.
- Ability to lift and carry up to 50 pounds as needed.
- Ability to work around heavy machinery, welding operations, overhead cranes, noise, heat, and airborne particles.
- Ability to wear all required personal protective equipment.
