Duties:
- Lays out, assembles, pre-fits, and bonds a variety of metal, composite, or laminate fabrications, assemblies, parts, skins, or equipment.
- Follows engineering and manufacturing specifications and orders to determine parts to be bonded and the temperature and pressure required.
- Cuts parts or materials to size.
- Operates autoclave, hydraulic presses, and ovens to complete the bonding cycle.
- Sands, burrs, and smoothes over areas.
- Applies sealing resins to cut or exposed edges.
- Process methods and sequences vary depending on compounds, contours, and lay-up transitions.
- May perform complicated rework or repair. May monitor and verify quality in accordance with controlled procedures.
- Utilizes lay-up tools, which include both optical and hard tools, in the fabrication of composite and metal assemblies.
- Obtains required information from prints, charts, sketches, work orders, documents, verbal, and electronic information.
- Uses shop mathematics and precision measuring instruments to complete work assignments.
- Verifies work performed is per work instruction and meets process and/or engineering specification.
- Ensures equipment and tool certification occurs per procedure.
- Uses and controls solvents and cleaning solutions in the preparation of details, tools, and assemblies for bonding and paint per established procedures.
- Performs routine minor machine maintenance as part of daily work duties.
- Routinely moves product within the immediate manufacturing work area using shop-assigned equipment and completes transactions necessary to move product to the next operation.
- On an exception basis, moves product to the next operation within a building.
- Supports the continuous flow of product within the manufacturing process by training and assisting employees at all classification levels.
- 2 years’ minimum experience in aviation production or equivalent.
- Previous experience with lay-ups, assembling, pre-fitting, and bonding a variety of metal, composite, or laminate fabrications, assemblies, parts, skins, or equipment.
- Must be able and willing to work any shift, including overtime as needed.
- Preferred: 5+ years minimum experience in aviation production.
Required Skills:
- Knowledge of station safety, quality (Clean as You Go / Foreign Object Debris), and OSHA regulations.
- Basic skills using a variety of tools.
- Good verbal and written communication skills in English.
- Ability to articulate complex issues to others.
- Ability to maintain confidentiality in all matters is essential.
- Demonstrated effectiveness in interpersonal skills.
Preferred Technical Systems Proficiency:
- Able to enter, generate, and retrieve information using a computer (SAP and Excel knowledge required).
Education:
- High School Diploma / GED or WorkKeys Assessment completion.
- Ability to successfully complete the following training provided after recruitment:
- Health & Safety
- General aircraft familiarization
- Quality Training
Preferred Training:
- Training from a vocational school or previous employer in the use of composite lay-ups and fabrication.
