In this thesis project, you will be part of Siemens Energy’s world-leading gas turbine and energy technology organization in Finspång. Working alongside specialists in thermodynamics and performance engineering, you will explore innovative power generation solutions that support the transition toward more sustainable energy systems.
A typical day may involve reviewing the latest research on hydrogen-based power cycles, building thermodynamic models, analyzing cycle performance, and discussing results with colleagues. Your work will focus on a direct fired steam cycle, where hydrogen combustion produces steam directly, enabling a potentially highly efficient energy conversion process. By comparing this concept with competing technologies, you will help assess its viability for future clean power generation applications.
How You’ll Make an Impact
Your focus will be to explore the innovative technology behind direct fired steam cycles. This cycle utilizes the unique feature of hydrogen, which forms pure steam when oxidized. By replacing a steam boiler with a combustion chamber, a direct fired steam cycle can be realized. The cycle offers very high efficiency due to the high temperature of a direct fired cycle, combined with pumped compression and a single working fluid for the entire temperature range. The main responsibilities will be to:
- Compare the direct fired steam cycle with competing concepts.
- Set up heat and mass balance models with comparable assumptions for a fair evaluation.
- Conduct thermodynamic modeling and literature screening.
This work presents an exciting challenge at the forefront of research and provides an opportunity to contribute to the development of sustainable energy solutions.
What You Bring
We are seeking an enthusiastic and curious student with the following qualifications:
- Student in energy, mechanical engineering, chemical engineering, or a related field.
- Basic knowledge of thermodynamics and modeling.
- Ability to work both independently and as part of a team.
About the Team
You will become part of a friendly and supportive team of around 20 engineers working with thermodynamics and performance calculations. The team brings together experienced experts and new talents, creating a positive environment where knowledge is shared freely and collaboration is part of everyday work.
Our Gas Services division offers low-emission power generation through service and decarbonization. Zero or low emission power generation and all gas turbines under one roof, steam turbines, and generators. Decarbonization opportunities through service offerings, modernization, and digitalization of the fleet.
