Position Summary
The Driver Success & Safety Manager is responsible for recruiting, onboarding, developing, and retaining professional CDL drivers while ensuring the company maintains full compliance with all federal, state, and customer safety requirements. This role serves as the primary advocate for driver success by fostering a positive work environment, providing coaching and support, and ensuring every driver has the tools and resources needed to succeed.
The Driver Success & Safety Manager will oversee driver qualification files, safety programs, regulatory compliance, training initiatives, and performance management while working closely with dispatch, maintenance, and leadership to promote a culture of safety, accountability, and operational excellence.
Essential Duties & Responsibilities:
Driver Recruitment & Hiring
- Recruit, interview, and hire qualified CDL drivers.
- Manage the hiring process from application through orientation.
- Conduct background checks, employment verifications, and pre-employment screenings.
- Ensure all new hires meet company qualifications and FMCSA requirements.
- Develop recruiting strategies to attract high-quality drivers.
Driver Success & Retention
- Lead new driver orientation and onboarding.
- Serve as the primary point of contact for driver support and engagement.
- Conduct regular check-ins with new and existing drivers.
- Coach drivers on performance, professionalism, and customer service.
- Develop initiatives that improve driver satisfaction and retention.
- Address driver concerns promptly and professionally.
- Partner with operations to ensure drivers have the resources needed to be successful.
Safety & Compliance
- Maintain complete and compliant Driver Qualification (DQ) files.
- Ensure compliance with FMCSA, DOT, OSHA, state regulations, and company policies.
- Monitor Hours of Service (HOS) compliance and ELD performance.
- Administer the company's Drug & Alcohol Testing Program, including pre-employment, random, post-accident, reasonable suspicion, return-to-duty, and follow-up testing.
- Monitor CDL licenses, medical certificates, and required endorsements.
- Conduct periodic internal compliance audits.
- Maintain all required safety and compliance records.
- Stay current on regulatory changes and implement necessary policy updates.
Safety Management
- Develop and deliver safety training programs.
- Conduct driver safety meetings and ongoing education.
- Investigate accidents, incidents, and claims.
- Perform root cause analyses and implement corrective actions.
- Review telematics, dash camera events, CSA scores, and safety performance metrics.
- Coach drivers to improve safe driving habits and reduce preventable accidents.
- Promote a proactive safety culture throughout the organization.
Performance Management
- Monitor driver performance metrics.
- Conduct annual driver reviews and performance evaluations.
- Recognize high-performing drivers and provide coaching where improvement is needed.
- Work collaboratively with dispatch and leadership to resolve operational issues affecting driver performance.
Administrative Responsibilities
- Maintain accurate employee and compliance records.
- Prepare reports related to safety, compliance, recruiting, and driver performance.
- Assist with customer safety questionnaires and compliance documentation.
- Support insurance audits and DOT reviews.
- Recommend improvements to policies, procedures, and best practices.
Qualifications
- Minimum 3-5 years of experience in trucking safety, compliance, recruiting, or fleet operations.
- Strong knowledge of FMCSA regulations and DOT compliance requirements.
- Experience maintaining Driver Qualification Files.
- Working knowledge of Hours of Service regulations and ELD systems.
- Excellent communication, coaching, and leadership skills.
- Strong organizational and problem-solving abilities.
- Ability to build positive relationships with drivers while maintaining accountability.
- Proficiency with Microsoft Office and transportation management software.
Preferred Qualifications
- Experience with safety management systems and CSA compliance.
- Knowledge of drug and alcohol testing regulations.
- Experience conducting accident investigations.
- Bilingual (English/Spanish or Punjabi) is a plus.
