The Sandy Springs Recycling Center operates drop-off recycling facility for the communities of Sandy Springs and Johns Creek. We are a division of Keep North Fulton Beautiful (KNFB), a non-profit organization that also provides environmental education and conservation programs to the communities of Sandy Springs and Johns Creek. We have served these communities since our formation as a 501(c)(3) non-profit organization in 1984.
The Forklift Operator/Materials Handler manages the day-to-day operations of the Sandy Springs drop-off recycling center, ensuring that the facility is clean and well-organized and that operations staff and volunteers are friendly and helpful to customers. Our employees enjoy a casual, flexible, team-focused workplace. This role will appeal to an individual who enjoys working outdoors all day. The position is located in central Sandy Springs. We are open Monday, Tuesday, Thursday, Friday and Saturday, 9 AM to 5 PM. A 30 minute unpaid lunch break is provided daily, plus two 15 minute breaks when center traffic makes this feasible.
*** Pay starts at $18 an hour, 9-15 hours per week
*** The candidate will be expected to work every Saturday
Job Duties & Responsibilities
The Forklift Operator/Materials Handler role involves:
● Overall management of recycling drop-off facility operations and maintenance of equipment
● Open and close the recycling center daily
● Greet customers and provide direction to customers as needed
● Drive a forklift, and sort/move/store recyclable materials
● Prepare recyclable materials for vendor pick-up
● Supervise an average of 4-8 Community Service Worker (CSW) volunteers each day who assist with drop-off facility tasks
● Train new CSWs several times per week, as needed
● Ensure operations staff, volunteers, and customers on-site at the drop-off facility adhere to Occupational Safety & Health Administration guidelines and regulations
● Conduct a safety audit on a weekly basis
● Occasionally fill-in for other team members when back-up is needed
Required Skills & Experience
● High school diploma AND forklifting experience
● Must be currently or previously forklift certified
● Experience operating heavy machinery, such as a baler and a crusher
● Must have a friendly, outgoing personality and customer service orientation
● Some supervisory experience in a fast-paced environment is desirable
● An interest in training, managing, and delegating tasks to volunteers throughout the day is required
● Good knowledge of OSHA health and safety regulations is required
● Must have a valid driver’s license and own a reliable vehicle. Must be able to pass a complete background check. Drug and alcohol-free workplace
● English / Spanish bilingual preferred
● Physical demands:
o Requires lifting and carrying objects up to 70 pounds regularly
o Tasks are performed primarily by standing or walking at least 90% of the time
o Requires the ability to work outdoors in extreme weather conditions the majority of each day
o Ability to bend, stoop and reach above the shoulders
