We are seeking a Trauma Surgery Physician Assistant for a 90-day assignment in Montana, starting Jul 18, 2026. This role involves 24-hour in-house coverage with 7a-7p and 7p-7a shifts. The Physician Assistant will be crucial in the emergency department for trauma resuscitation, first assisting surgeons in the operating room, managing admitted trauma patients, and providing education to fellows, students, and residents.
Responsibilities and Duties
- Participate in the emergency department resuscitation of trauma patients.
- Lead or assist the trauma team in the trauma bay for resuscitation.
- First assist the trauma surgeon in the operating room when needed.
- Participate in performance improvement, morbidity and mortality conferences, research, outreach, and prevention initiatives.
- Educate trauma Fellows, APP students, and residents.
- Update families, discuss patient condition, and develop plans of care.
- Conduct and coordinate education to increase the knowledge of patients, patient families, and others, providing appropriate instruction to support the continuum of care.
- Train other staff in areas of clinical expertise and provide teaching to students to increase their clinical knowledge and ensure safe patient care.
- Stay abreast of current trends in healthcare practice and participate in continuing medical education to ensure optimal clinical knowledge and effective patient care skills.
- Communicate with surgeons for direction as needed and exercise autonomy in managing admitted trauma patients.
Additional Information
- Required Board Certification: Neurological Surgery
- EMR: Epic
- Cases include patient/acute and/or chronic care, pharma management, patient assessment, treatment plan implementation, computer keyboarding and technology proficiency, communication, and life support.
- Manage admitted trauma patients, rounding daily with surgeons, writing progress notes, monitoring diagnostics, answering calls/pages from nursing staff, and collaborating with other specialties.
- Be present for trauma arrivals in the ED, assisting with procedures such as chest tube insertion, suturing, stapling, and lacerations.
- Work in a Trauma Level One facility.
- Anticipate an average of 10 patients on trauma service during the busier summer months (June-August).
- Schedule: 7a-7p, 7p-7a, ensuring 24-hour in-house coverage.
