CONSTRUCTION ASSISTANT - RESIDENTIAL CONSTRUCTION

Alexander Walker Homes / MaxFlo Construction
Columbus / Powell, Ohio
Full-Time, Permanent Primarily Field-Based
$22-$27 per hour, based on experience

PLEASE READ THE POSITION REQUIREMENTS AND APPLICATION INSTRUCTIONS BEFORE APPLYING.

We are looking for someone who wants to build a career in residential construction and grow toward a Project Manager or Superintendent role.

This position combines jobsite coordination with practical field work. Your day may include checking subcontractor progress, documenting a punch list, picking up materials, helping with a rental-property repair, and updating ownership on what needs attention.

You do not need years of project management experience. You do need reliability, organization, clear communication, a willingness to learn, and a genuine interest in working on construction sites.

ABOUT US

Alexander Walker Homes / MaxFlo Construction is a family-owned real estate and construction company in Central Ohio. Our work includes new homes, residential renovations, rental turns, property maintenance, and repairs.

You will work closely with ownership and experienced construction professionals. Responsibility will increase as you demonstrate good judgment, follow-through, and the ability to handle assignments independently.

WHAT YOU WILL DO

• Visit jobsites to check progress, workmanship, safety, and upcoming needs.
• Help coordinate subcontractors, vendors, inspections, and schedules.
• Follow up on incomplete work and communicate delays or problems early.
• Assist with material ordering, pickups, deliveries, and jobsite logistics.
• Help complete quality-control walks, punch lists, and rental turns.
• Keep project photos, schedules, task lists, and updates organized.
• Assist with basic repairs, maintenance, cleanup, and smaller construction tasks when appropriate.
• Learn to identify field problems, ask useful questions, and help develop solutions.
• Gradually take ownership of smaller projects as your skills develop.
• Participate in a rotating after-hours schedule for true rental-property emergencies.

REQUIREMENTS - PLEASE CONFIRM THESE BEFORE APPLYING

• Available for permanent, full-time work Monday-Friday during normal construction/jobsite hours.
• Able to work onsite throughout the Columbus/Powell area.
• Valid driver's license and reliable transportation for travel between jobsites and material pickups.
• Comfortable spending most of the workday in the field.
• Willing to occasionally perform basic construction, repair, maintenance, and cleanup tasks.
• Comfortable with the $22-$27/hour compensation range.
• Willing to participate in the rotating emergency schedule.
• Currently authorized to work in the United States without requiring current or future employer sponsorship.

If you need to relocate, explain your relocation plan and the date you can begin working onsite.

WHAT WE VALUE MOST

• Showing up prepared and following through.
• Keeping track of details without constant reminders.
• Communicating professionally with ownership, subcontractors, vendors, and residents.
• Taking responsibility when something goes wrong.
• Asking for guidance before attempting work beyond your training.
• Learning from feedback and taking on increasing responsibility.
• Treating routine maintenance and smaller assignments with the same care as larger projects.

HELPFUL EXPERIENCE - NOT ALL REQUIRED

• Construction Management coursework or a degree.
• Construction internships, co-ops, or field experience.
• Residential construction, remodeling, carpentry, maintenance, landscaping, or other practical trade experience.
• Reading construction plans.
• Scheduling, estimating, material tracking, or project documentation.
• Procore, Bluebeam, Microsoft Project, Excel, or similar tools.
• OSHA 10 or OSHA 30 certification.

We welcome candidates with relevant transferable experience who can explain why residential construction is the career they want to pursue.

HOW TO APPLY - COMPLETE BOTH STEPS

STEP 1: SUBMIT YOUR RESUME AND WRITTEN SCREENING ANSWERS

Apply through ZipRecruiter, including the screening questions.

STEP 2: SUBMIT YOUR VIDEO RESPONSE

Please record one video answering the seven questions below in order. Aim for approximately 10-12 minutes total.

Use specific examples and explain what YOU personally did. Examples from employment, school, volunteering, or personal projects are welcome.

Why do you want to build a career in residential construction? What would you like to learn in your first year, and where would you like to be in five years?
Describe a construction, maintenance, repair, equipment, or other practical task you completed yourself. How did you learn the task, work safely, check the result, and handle anything beyond your experience?
Tell us about an assignment you were responsible for that did not go according to plan. How did you organize the next steps, communicate the problem, and follow through? What was the outcome?
Imagine you arrive at a rental property and discover an active water leak. A subcontractor then cancels today's scheduled work, and you have a material pickup due. What would you do in the first 30 minutes? Explain your priorities, who you would update, and when you would seek help rather than attempt a repair yourself.
Walk us through how you would track several open tasks across different jobsites so nothing gets forgotten. Include any software, lists, photos, calendars, or follow-up methods you have actually used.
What methods would you use to measure and improve operational efficiency in a small business setting? Give an example relevant to jobsite coordination, maintenance, or material handling.
How would you balance keeping established operations running smoothly with suggesting improvements as a new employee? Explain how you would learn the existing process and decide when to raise an idea.

RECORDING AND UPLOADING INSTRUCTIONS

Please complete both steps so we can fully evaluate your application. We assess the substance of your answers and relevant experience-not video production quality.

If recording or uploading a video is difficult, contact us through ZipRecruiter so we can arrange another way for you to answer the same questions.

Company Description

Alexander Walker Homes is a residential real estate development and construction brand operating across central Ohio. We acquire, renovate, and build from the ground up - holding most assets as long-term rentals while selectively developing new construction. We run a lean, high-standards operation. We do things once, and we do them right.

As a small, owner-operated company, our schedule reflects that reality - construction and rental property management don't run on a strict 9-to-5. Weather delays, subcontractor scheduling changes, and tenant needs mean some flexibility is part of the job.
