Part of the series: How to Read Job Descriptions (Before You Apply)
In Week 1, we covered how hourly listings often leave out critical details.
In Week 2, we identified red flags that affect pay and scheduling.
In Week 3, we looked at green flags that signal stability.
Now let’s make sure what’s written actually holds up.

1. Call or Check the Actual Location
For local hourly roles, confirm:
- The location exists
- The store/restaurant is actively hiring
- The posting isn’t outdated
Some listings stay live long after hiring is paused.
2. Confirm Pay Structure
Ask:
- Is the starting wage firm?
- Are tips included or separate?
- How often are raises reviewed?
Transparency should extend beyond the listing.
3. Clarify Scheduling Expectations
Before applying, consider:
- Is the role seasonal?
- Are shifts rotating or fixed?
- Is weekend availability mandatory?
Scheduling stability is everything in hourly work.
4. Ask About Overtime and Benefits
If full-time is mentioned:
- When do benefits begin?
- Is overtime consistently available?
Written promises should have clear answers.
The Pattern
Across this series we’ve learned:
Week 1: Details matter.
Week 2: Red flags stack.
Week 3: Green flags signal structure.
Week 4: Confirm before committing.
Your time is valuable, especially when your income depends on it.
